Subsidy Scheme for the Hotel Industry

The Subsidy Scheme  for the Hotel Industry was materialised and completed during the 2007-2013 programming period.


AIM

The aim of the Scheme is to provide subsidies to hotel enterprises that completely or partially suspend their operation during the winter period in order to enroll their employees in training programs.

TARGET COMPANIES

Beneficiaries are the hotel enterprises operating in Cyprus, which suspend or intend to suspend their operation during the winter period and participate in the project “Training programs for employees working in hotel enterprises which suspend completely or partially their operation during the winter season”.

SUBSIDY

The subsidy covers the basic salary, the cost of living allowance and the mandatory employer contributions to the Social Insurance Fund.

FUNDING

The Scheme is co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Republic of Cyprus under the Operational Programme "Employment, Human Capital and Social Cohesion”.

OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS

The  objectives and benefits of the Scheme are:
· The continuous and systematic development of professional knowledge, skills and competencies, the consolidation of lifelong learning and retraining of employees in the hotel industry
· The extension of the duration of employment as a result of decreased seasonality period
· The increase of productivity increase as a result of the expected improvement of human capital,
· The contribution to the preparation for qualifications accreditation under the applicable national / European or other recognized professional standards.
· The use of the suspension period for retraining of staff
· The use of European funds for staff retraining.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

The programs are offered in all provinces of Cyprus during the Hotels’ suspension period, as this is defined by the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. The programs are offered into two levels:
· The basic level program is designed for lower rank employees. The program aims to enrich and complement the knowledge of the trainees in their specialties, and covers subjects such as the current industry trends, professional behavior, communication and Cyprus culture and heritage. In addition, it contributes to the preparation of employees for qualification accreditation in accordance with the professional standards.


· The supervisory level program is designed for supervisors and department heads. The program aims to modernize and broaden the knowledge and skills of trainees. It includes subjects such as management of human resources, cross-training, the use of technology in hotel operations, modern marketing and promotion of sustainable development.
